If you don’t know by now that sugar is terrible for your health then we NEED to talk. I personally know the impact sugar has on my health and the addictive qualities it possesses. As a previous self proclaimed sugar addict I’ve tried it all from sugar detoxes, moderation, you name it. However three simple tricks I implement today help me keep cravings in check while still allowing me to enjoy a treat here and there without going into an all out binge on cookies.

#1- Add more cinnamon-When we eat sugar it compromises our digestive system in many ways but one way is through a reduction in stomach acid which contributes to something called leaky gut. This weakened digestive system needs support and one way to do this is through cinnamon which acts similar to ginger in its stimulating effect for the digestive tract. In addition to this it stabilizes our blood sugar, which also is compromised when our consumption of sweets is at an all time high. I love adding it into my coffee alternatives in the morning, in tea or having this smoothie.

#2- Eat more protein-When our digestive system is compromised so is our immune system. Complete proteins which come from animal meats provide us with all the essential amino acids we need to properly fight off bad bacteria and any infections while also supporting our defenses. Along with amino acids protein is the macronutrient most associated with satiation. Satiation allows us to feel satisfied for longer periods of time, therefore reducing cravings.

#3- Increase your fat intake- Along with proteins, healthy fats provide us with so many benefits. They help reduce inflammation, curb hunger and cravings and dramatically stabilize our blood sugar which allows our body to avoid the dips and crashes we experience when we over consume sweets.

#4- Read your labels!- I always make sure to read my labels but when I notice the sugar monster creeping back in I am extra cautious about what I’m eating. Added sugars are in everything, and even natural sugars like dates can give us the same crashes as a cookie. Try to avoid anything sweet like Larabars, sweetened almond milks or dried fruits. Adding this precaution for 2 weeks helps set you back on track and on the road for success.
